Vision and design for the public realm (streets and local parks) to deliver greenspace equity, climate change adaptation and more liveable neighbourhoods.

In support of delivering objectives from the Urban Ngahere (Forest) Strategy, Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan, and Auckland Council’s Indigenous Biodiversity Strategy, this project will be delivered over four years. The Urbanist has taken an integrated approach to delivering outcomes that help rebalance green space equity in communities and regenerate neighbourhoods ecologically and socially.

Focussing on areas across Tāmaki Makaurau with low canopy cover, high heat vulnerability, and low access to green space, while also aiming to improve ecological links for biodiversity and social movement at a broader scale. This project is being delivered through research and consultation with the community, ensuring that we create neighbourhoods that are more resilient to the effects of climate change, enhance biodiversity, and help enable happy, healthy and resilient communities.

“The Urbanist has developed an innovative and sustainable framework for planting the public realm (local parks and streets) across Tāmaki Makaurau that shows great expertise in urban design, planning and landscape. This strategy ensures we create neighbourhoods that are resilient to the effects of climate change, enhance biodiversity and enable communities to thrive.”

David Stejskal, Regional Arborists and Ecological Manager, Community Facilities, Auckland Council.
